It seems to do more for insurance companies and doctors who make mistakes rather than those who are uninsured, denied coverage or having trouble keeping up with skyrocketing rates.

GOP health care reform: A simple explanation

Alternately, here's a simplification of the latest Democratic proposals:

Health care reform: A simple explanation

The Uninsured

Those who oppose expanding health care because they do not want to help pay for those without coverage, need to understand that they already pay for the uninsured.

When the uninsured walk into a hospital for care, they are treated. The hospital passes these unpaid costs onto the insured and their insurance companies via increased rates for care and supplies. CNN recently did a story on some of the outrageous prices being charged... like a $1,000 toothbrush, $40 hand wipes, etc. Hospitals claim this is necessary to cover the costs of caring for the uninsured and insurance companies rarely bat and eye. Premiums go up for the insured and the cycle continues.

It would be more beneficial to us all if more people had healthcare coverage. There would be more preventative care, young and healthy help offset costs for older, less heatlhy and we're paying for the uninsured anyway.

Why Some Vote Against Their Own Interests

The Republicans' shock victory in the election for the US Senate seat in Massachusetts meant the Democrats lost their supermajority in the Senate. This year's "winner" frequently trafficked in outlandish conspiracy theories about the Obama administration and progressives in general, unleashed a barrage of outrageous, incendiary and increasingly paranoid rhetoric on a daily basis, and used both his nationally syndicated radio show and cable news program to openly organize political events targeting progressive policies and politicians.

2009 Misinformer of the Year: Glenn Beck

Death Panels

PolitiFact asked it's readers to vote for the "2009 Lie of the Year" and Sarah Palin's 'Death Panels' claim easily won. Her assertion — that the government would set up boards to determine whether seniors and the disabled were worthy of care — spread through newscasts, talk shows, blogs and town hall meetings. Opponents of health care legislation said it revealed the real goals of the Democratic proposals. Advocates for health reform said it showed the depths to which their opponents would sink. That shouldn't be surprising, though; Obama's honeymoon is ending.

What is striking is the extent to which birthers, led by Orley Taitz, and the health care misinformers, led by Betsy McCaughey, are working from a similar playbook. Here's an outline of how the process works:

Take a complicated issue that people don't understand (e.g. presidential citizenship reqirements and Hawaiian birth records or the complex health care reform bills pending in Congress).

Advance a disturbing hypothesis about the issue that will appeal to your side of the aisle (e.g. Obama isn't a legitimate president; the health bill will take away your freedom).

Misconstrue available evidence to construct arguments supporting your point.

Promote these myths widely. If you are successful enough in doing so, the media will feel obligated to report on them. Coverage will then frequently be presented in an artificially balanced "he said," "she said" format, giving further credence to your claims.

When your arguments are debunked, claim that the media is trying to silence you to prevent the truth from being revealed.

Repeat steps 3-5 until various elites (e.g. John Boehner on health, Lou Dobbs on Obama's birth certificate) start claiming you have raised legitimate questions about the issue of interest.

It's Time for a Public Option

The Politics of Spite

Paul Krugman offers a very accurate view of today's Republican party.

"...an essential truth about the state of American politics: at this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. Many people support President Obama and his agenda, however a very loud minority is making waves. RR takes a look at what is driving the hatred that is tearing our country apart.

Misinformation / Disinformation / Propaganda
This is probably one of the largest drivers of the current hostility towards Obama and the Democrats. Dishonest politicians, divisive pundits and faux cable news channels are distorting facts to fire up the right. Many conservatives have bought into the 'left-biased mainstream media myth' and only subscribe to far right media. Some won't even take the extra step to verify info via fact check websites or other nonpartisan sources because of the paranoia right-biased media creates. Now the far right is trying to convince people that climatologist don't understand climate, scientists don't understand science and economists don't know anything about the economy. It's classic propaganda working to 'dumb-down' the audience.

Racism
Some people simply don't like the idea of an African American U.S. President. Racism still lingers in older generations and it's alive and well in various neighborhoods throughout rural and urban America - especially the South. The South seems to be where the strength of the GOP lies, so it's no surprise that the party remains relatively quiet in condemning the pundits, entertainers and politicians who promote it.

Greed
Both parties are influenced by lobbyists and corporate interest groups, however the GOP seems to favor big business. They're known for easing the regulations that protect consumers and integrating industry desires into policy. Obama and the Democrats have promised tighter regulations, more accountability and some major policy changes. A energy policy with a greater focus on renewable resources shifts focus away from oil and proposed health insurance reform may cut into the profits of insurance providers. Both industries have long and deep ties within Republican party and much of the propaganda found on right wing media is part of their effort to influence public opinion.

Fear
People naturally fear change. Of course, this was a key component of Obama's presidential campaign and he's been working hard to deliver on his campaign promises. Unfortunately, the current administration inherited an economy on life support from the previous Republican administration thus making the job much more difficult. Some like to forget this simple fact and blame Obama for listening to the majority of economists who advised swift action. Still, the deficit increase is worrisome, but doing nothing as the Republicans had proposed would have been disastrous.

I hate to think where our country will be in another year if the far right continues to stir the pot with racism, distortions and lies. Moderate and sensible conservatives should denounce some of the outrageous behavior before it's too late.

Health Care Reform Misinformation

Understandably, people have concerns regarding health care reform. Plan costs, restrictions, eligibility and effect on the private sector are all legitimate items that should be examined more closely. Unfortunately however, some opponents of health care reform are misleading the public via a campaign of misinformation and outright lies. Some are doing this in an effort to water down or kill health care reform while others are clearly putting politics first.

GET THE FACTS:

FactCheck Wire: Health Care
PolitiFact: Health Care
Truth or Fiction: Health Care

SPECIFIC ARTICLES:

USA Today: Myths on health care
CBS News: 10 Health Care Reform Myths
Obama wants to kill your grandma: Five right-wing myths about healthcare reform, and the facts
CNN: Health care fact check video
Seven Falsehoods About Health Care
False rumors influencing health care debate
NPR: Separating Fact From Fiction In Health Care Debate
Twenty-six Lies About H.R. 3200

JOIN THE CONVERSATION:

Health care reform misinformation - separating fact from fiction

All this begs the question... Ruinous Right?!" we discussed the declining G.O.P. image and a possible hope for moderate Republican leadership. We stated the belief that the influence of the "Ruinous Right" was growing weaker and pointed to several articles supporting that belief. We also referred back to an older post entitled "Ignorance and Name Calling Prominent In Right-Wing Blogs" that highlighted divisive right-wing blogs and their demise.

Unfortunately, political zealots who have no room for compromise or mutual understanding are part of our cultural fabric and are here to stay. Even as many members of the Republican party criticize it's ultra-conservative stance, misguided leaders and divisive pundits, some members continue on with their far-right rhetoric. It's doubtful we'll ever be able to celebrate the death of all far-right (or far-left) individuals who thrive on divisive rhetoric and misinformation. Our only hope is that their self-serving agendas and influence over others will diminish.

In April 2009, several polls conducted attracted attention for their notably low levels of self-reported Republican voters. In particular, ABC/WaPo reported the number of Republicans as 21 percent, CBS/NYT at 20 percent, NBC/WSJ also at 20 percent (not counting "leaners"), and Pew at 22 percent.

So, how have things progressed since this past April? A recent Gallup poll offers up the following:

"Almost 4 out of 10 (38%) Republicans and Republican-leaning independents have an unfavorable opinion of their own party..."

"Fifty-three percent of Americans today have a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, compared to just 34% who have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party."

"... a substantial minority of Americans who identify with or lean toward the Republican Party also have negative views of the party. Almost 4 out of 10 Republicans say their opinions of the party are unfavorable, and a number of Republicans volunteer that the first thing that comes to mind when they think about the GOP is "unfavorable" or "lost its direction."

Only time will tell if sensibility and a cooperative spirit will prevail over selfishness and divisiveness within the Republican party. Hopefully, the ideas from Republicans like Colin Powell and Tom Ridge will prevail over those being offered by Dick Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and some far-right bloggers.

Republicans Down on Their Own Party
GOP needs to listen to Colin Powell
Colin Powell fires back at Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney

R.I.P. Ruinous Right?!

The Ruinous Right blog launched over a year ago to help combat the policies and propaganda coming from the real "ruinous right" - far right conservatives, far right media outlets, far right blogs and far right pundits. Today marks President Barack Obama's 100th day in office and it may also mark the beginning of the end of the divisive and narrow-minded politics of many members of the Republican party.

The influence of hate mongers and bigots, such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage is diminishing. These authors and pundits seem to appeal to a dwindling audience of mostly white folk who still cling to guns and/or gated straight white communities. Fox News is recognized more and more as simply a propaganda tool of the right and not 'Fair and Balanced' as they like to claim.

Far right members of the Republican party are also losing their charm. Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Newt Gingrich and the likes may still wield strong influence within the G.O.P., but many sensible moderate Republicans are beginning to realize their detriment to the party. The nomination of John McCain seemed to be a step in the right direction initially, but he caved to the far right and voting Americans made their feelings known by handing Barack Obama a decisive win along with shifting the balance of power away from Republicans in Congress.

Many of the far right blogs that posted headlines of hatred or distortions regarding socialism are now offline or rarely updated. I'm very happy to report that many mentioned in my article "Ignorance and Name Calling Prominent In Right-Wing Blogs" are now defunct.

Today, only 20% of Americans identify with the Republican party. The barbarous rhetoric and divisive politics is finally taking it's toll.

Now, as Barack Obama and the country reflect on the past 100 days since the historic election of the first African American President, G.O.P defections and a possible change in party strategy share the headlines:

Republican Party on brink of irrelevance?
Specter defection a wake-up call to GOP
GOP in search of change of its own
GOP set to launch rebranding effort
Pelosi to Republican voters: 'Take back your party'
Longtime GOP Sen. I started listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio in 1992, when I was twelve years old. By eighth grade I had read both his books, The Way Things Ought to Be and See, I Told You So. When his television show was on the air, I rarely missed an episode. During the summer when I wasn´t in school, and over vacations and sick-days, I routinely listened to all three hours of his radio show. I was familiar with Rush Limbaugh and the "real policy material" beneath his "jokes and teasing bluster" before there even was such a thing as Media Matters or ThinkProgress to spoon-feed me distorting excerpts.”

“It took a few years. I had some growing up to do. The more I opened myself up to a wider range of views — and not merely a narrow variation of my own views perfectly describing the phony broad-mindedness of which many conservatives are guilty, it seems to me — the less what I was hearing from Limbaugh made sense. Once I had read Voltaire, Carl Sagan, Thomas Paine, the wisdom of Rush Limbaugh looked trivial at best. Once I had read and heard from Mark Twain, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, the humor of Rush Limbaugh hardly seemed to exist at all. I have no intellectual keepers. No one has shaped my opinion on Rush Limbaugh other than Rush Limbaugh. The more I heard him as an adult rather than an adolescent, the more I came to see him not as insightful, funny and wise, but as tiresome, clownish, self-serving, and oh, just the tiniest bit hypocritical.”

AMEN

Obamas to use own cash to redecorate White House

The President and First Lady have turned down $100,000 in federal funds that is traditionally allotted to new presidents for renovation projects. Credit mainly goes to Citigroup and the possible limit on short selling. Citigroup cooled some worries about its wellbeing and regulators said they may reinstate a trading rule. That said, it's good news on the 50th day of the Obama presidency after the market had been dropping on fears of a worsening recession.

Republicans continue to bash Obama and the Democrat's stimulus plan without offering up any sound ideas of their own. They're quick to criticize Obama regarding the floundering economy and dropping stock market even though he has only been in office less than 2 months and the stimulus bill only recently passed. Most Americans view Obama positively and know it will take time for the economy to react.

Only time will tell who was on the right side of the debate in solving our country's economic crisis, but today was a good day among several bad ones.

Limbaugh, Hannity, and the GOP: an iron triangle of stimulus misinformation

On any given day during the current congressional debate over the economic recovery plan, chances are good that Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity will say something false about the administration's or congressional Democrats' efforts to pass a bill.

GOP Crossroads

The Republican Party is at a fork in the road and recent events have propelled two of it's leaders into prominent positions as it gets ready to choose a path forward.

On one side stands Michael Steele, the newly elected party chairman, who is charismatic, conservative, media savvy and a person of color. Some Republicans are hardcore Rush supporters and want the GOP to adopt Limbaugh's extreme views and continue confrontation with the Democrats. This is truly exciting on so many different levels.

For one, he's the first African American chosen to lead our great nation and it demonstrates just how far we've progressed since the days of slavery and the more recent civil unjustness of the 30's, 40's, 50's & 60's. We have matured as a nation and now we've demonstrated this to the world and ourselves.

Secondly, it's a blow to the 'divide and conquer' strategy of the Right. The dishonorable smears and negative campaigns couldn't stop the momentum of hope, change and positivity. Most right-wing bloggers spent more time posting hateful misinformation and retouched images of Obama than they did discussing real issues. Most knew that the policies and corruption of the Bush/Cheney administration meant Republicans were in for an uphill battle. They needed to distract attention away from the fact that John McCain was simply offering more of the same while Barack Obama and the Democrats were offering real change. Divisive politics have worked well for the Republicans since Bush Sr.. Thankfully, most Americans saw through the tactic this time around.

McCain & Bush

John McCain lashed out at President Bush's record on a host of issues Wednesday, perhaps the Arizona senator's harshest criticism to date of his party's standard-bearer for the last eight years.

"Spending, the conduct of the war in Iraq for years, growth in the size of government, larger than any time since the Great Society, laying a $10 trillion debt on future generations of America, owing $500 billion to China, obviously, failure to both enforce and modernize the [financial] regulatory agencies that were designed for the 1930s and certainly not for the 21st century, failure to address the issue of climate change seriously," McCain told the Washington Times when asked to name his criticisms of the current president.

"Those are just some of them," McCain said, laughing.

McCain lashes out at Bush's record

Yet John McCain supported Bush and voted with him over 90% of the time.

McCain on George W. The McCain-Palin ticket is falling further behind in the polls and key states are turning blue quickly. There is only one month to election day and desperate times call for desperate measures.

To mark their return to smear politics, Sarah Palin launched the first salvo Saturday at a fundraiser in Colorado accusing Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists". This low blow was in reference to Obama's loose ties to 60's radical William Ayers.

"Our opponent, though, is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect – imperfect enough that he's palling around with terrorists who would target their own country," she said. "Americans need to know this. I think, okay we gotta get the word out. This is in fairness to the electorate we gotta start telling people what the other side represents."

Palin made similar comments later at a rally in Carson, California. Obama's Chicago, Illinois, home is in the same neighborhood as Bill Ayers, a founder of the radical Weather Underground, which was involved in several bombings in the early 1970s, including the Pentagon and the Capitol, and the two have met several times since Obama's 1995 campaign for a state Senate seat.

Palin cited an article in Saturday's New York Times about Obama's relationship with Ayers, now 63. But that article concluded that "the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called 'somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.' "

Several other publications, including the Washington Post, Time magazine, the Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic, have debunked the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship.

Expect more misinformation and smears in the coming weeks. It seems McCain will do anything to win and perhaps Republicans love their party more than they love this county.

Learn more:

CNN Fact Check
Barack Obama Barely Knows William Ayers
Fact Check on Obama and Ayers

Story resource: Palin hits Obama for 'terrorist' connection

UPDATE: Obama preempts the latest smear campaign from the McCain-Palin campaign. Some of them were almost laughable, like Mitt Romney blaming the eight years of the Bush Administration on "liberals." And some were trivial, like Mike Huckabee saying that Sarah Palin got more votes in her first run for mayor of a town of 7,000 than the 84,000 votes Joe Biden got in his Presidential run.

Here were just a few of the major lies from last night:

They continued the lies about taxes, when Barack Obama's tax policies are better than John McCain's for everyone but the folks as wealthy as John McCain.

They lied about Barack Obama's energy plan, ignoring his comprehensive plan in favor of their 'drill baby, drill" chanting.

They even smeared community organizing repeatedly, as if helping people organize to fight for their own rights is something to be mocked and denigrated.

The Republicans have nothing to run on, nothing to offer. If we take away their smears, they have nothing.
